From One Odd Private Eye To Another

Our quest to find odd and affected but scorchingly brilliant celluloid detectives continues.

I wrote recently about our obsession with Monk. We've almost completed all eight seasons on Netflix. Yesterday we watched all three episodes of Sherlock series one in one day. Scorching. Brilliant. Thrilling. And it ended too soon. Just as Shalhoub wowed and tickled us with Monk's obsessive compulsiveness, Cumberbatch portrayed a convincing, slightly Aspergerish Sherlock Holmes.

I've become quite resigned to the fact that the kiddo gets all the snide sexual references and isn't too troubled by the violence so he watched it with minimal censorship. There was no full blown expose of skin. Only some wordplay so I didn't mind him watching it either.

Here's a trailer for series one.

Here's the soundtrack which we liked. Not as catchy as Monk's but quite appropriate to the dark, cerebral theme I thought.

Not sure when series two is expected. We can't wait!

  3. We have this waiting to watch - I'm looking forward to it. I loved him in Hawking. We're also watching another really dark mini-series with him in it atm called The Last Enemy. Its pretty hard going!

  6. I quite liked this series, even though there were only a few episodes. I LOVED the scene with "arch enemies? People still HAVE arch enemies?" Classic.

We just finished watching Jeckyll but I do NOT recommend it for kids. It's brilliant - and features my should-have-been-the-next-Doctor friend James Nesbit. Gosh, he's good.

  7. Kerrie, I have to search Netflix for Hawking next. Ruth I hope you'll love the show as much as we did! I've been debating watching Jekyll too. Thanks for the warning sheila!

Monk has an arch enemy too...Harold Krenshaw. I didn't realize that the first time I watched the series when we lived in Singapore. I love arch enemies. Everyone needs one. ;)

  8. Thanks for the lead, Suji! I just added that one to my cue. My older and I are still working our way through Monk and patiently waiting for the last season of Bones to be released on Netflix. As a family , we're fans of Robin Hood and of Merlin, both recent BBC series.

  11. Hey Suji! My older son LUVs this Sherlock series & I do too. My husband, older son & I enjoyed every episode of Monk we could get our hands on. All three of my men (husband & 2 boys) are big fans of Doctor Who.... who is also quite a quirky character.
