LEARNING UPDATE
We alternated physics and German with logic while he was taking the eIMACS course. Now that he's finished logic, he should hopefully have more time to work on physics and German, possibly even wrap up physics by the end of this calendar year.
Apart from the staples, we are working together on Adler's How To Read a Book. I take notes in my copy, he uses the study guide by Mary Alice Newborn for his reading, then we discuss pertinent points during lunch or while in the car. I hope to ease him into applying Adler's suggestions in his other reading.After a lighter birthday week and finishing up logic, kiddo is enrolling in a linguistics course this week. Fingers crossed that it goes well.
DECOR UPDATE
After searching for months, I finally settled on a Quartet Cork Bulletin Board and two delightful Hook Nooks in green for the space above kiddo's desk. The Hook Nook is really cute for holding stationery and saving space at the same time. He finds SAT and other word lists helpful when writing and the bulletin board makes it easy to keep these lists in sight.
Kiddo's knick knacks, toys and board games used to be stacked in wicker baskets in a rather messy (to me) formation under our kitchen island. They have been moved to Foremost's Cube Storage System in Honey. And yes, Adrian gets his own little corner next to the shelves now. No more risking being bonged on the head sleeping under Big Bro's study desk, especially when it starts raining pens, rulers, and power cords.
And Adrian's bed is now just a short walk away from his toy bin too! Adrian loves his toys, particularly Rupert the hedgehog.

I know, aren't they cool? They may be used as hooks too, for things like scarves, leashes etc. I'm thinking of getting another one or two for other parts of the house. Rupert doesn't seem to mind. A very mild-mannered guy our Rupert. :)
DeleteIt has been a joy to read all of your posts lately. It seems that you and your son are having a very successful year. I tried using How to Read a Book many years ago with the twins, but it bore me to death. I know it is a classic, but I just couldn't get into it. It looks like you guys are finding a way to make it work.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame the twins! :) I tried reading the book two years ago and returned it after failing miserably. This year, something seems to have clicked for me. I am actually using it to help kiddo slow down a little with his reading. He reads very fast and sometimes I worry that he loses some of the detail when he reads that way. I don't think everyone needs this book. A reader who is already automatically reading carefully and knows how to synthesize information effectively might find it boring.
