Fitting Finale

DS won this back in June but due to our move and the trophy not yet being ready, we only managed to collect it today. A nice way to end his break away from Kumon after 3 full years.
Reason for Choosing Kumon
Although the Kumon Math program has its advantages, in my opinion, it shouldn't be the sole way to learn math. Just like 100% drill kills interest, Kumon alone day after day can drain even the most math-passionate child's love for the subject. Knowing full well that it could spell drudgery, we nevertheless chose Kumon to shape attitude. In our home, we don't stress on academic excellence. But we emphatically emphasize strength of spirit and positive attitudes.

However, even with Kumon running in the background, we ensured that he was getting lots of fun math stimuli and thankfully the result has been encouraging. Although he would from time to time complain about Kumon, he actually likes math a lot.
Time to Move On
After 3 years, we felt our objectives in enroling him in Kumon had been met. He also showed us he was ready by getting a perfect score in this competition (100% for 1st grade level questions and 100% for questions up to three years ahead of grade level). He had worked hard and shown persistence and diligence in completing assignments and making corrections without fuss. So it was time to move on to something different...and significantly less drill-like (wink!).

So this semester, we've been having fun with EPGY Math and Life of Fred (Fractions) both of which he really likes.

I'm glad he ended Kumon on this triumphant note. I hope that his memories of Kumon will be happy ones. I hope it has helped him understand that even if he doesn't like something, he should still give it his very best shot.
