This week, he had a taste of creative problem solving at a new coop I set up with a few other parents, as well as an impromptu "field trip" with a friend to The Tech Museum in downtown San Jose.
These are the books he has chosen to dive into this week.
The Nitty-Gritty Grammar manuals 1 and 2, his USA Today Easy Crossword Puzzles book, Murderous Maths' Phantom X, The Periodic Table by Adrian Dingle and Nature's Building Blocks: An A-Z Guide To The Elements by John Emsley. Underneath the remote controls is the Netflix envelope for The History Channel's Universe Season 3 Disc 3.
"Gasp, is he really reading Nitty-Gritty Grammar?" I wondered, secretly and joyously doing cartwheels in my mind. Unfortunately, he was only reading these...
Emsley's Nature's Building Blocks is sheer heaven for element lovers. I didn't realize DS loved elements this much. He's rattling off all sorts of info about Xenon and Niobium and Neptunium and goodness knows what else. I don't know how much of it he will actually understand and remember but it's very fascinating for him at this current point in time. The elements are alphabetically arranged in almost encyclopedic chapter style. Each chapter is interestingly divided into the various elements of elements...human element, element of history, element of the environment, element of economy, and even an element of surprise!
A photo of the kiddo snuggled up on the couch and enjoying the book:
Previously, Emsley's book wouldn't have been in my wishlist because of its minimal visual value. But it just goes to show that some books are just too good (that is, if they appeal to your child, please don't just take my word for it) to be left out.
look at him with his elements book - too cute :)
ReplyDeleteWell done you for setting up a co-op!
